The Wonky.Net News Archive

Back in the Ancient Days of the Internets, oh, say around 1996 B.B. or so (that's "Before Blogs" if you didn't know), I used to maintain a "News" section on this Web site (which in those days was called "Yogi On The Net"). Initially I followed the example of a lot of Web sites I was seeing back then, and just updating here and there and listing any new content or changes I'd made to the site. Somewhere in mid-1997 or so I discovered what Mike Keneally was up to over on his Web site, and I was so excited by what I observed there that I pretty much changed my modus operandi for the "News" section overnight. What Mike was doing with his "Mike Types To You" column, and Bryan Beller with his "Life Of Bryan" entries was what most people now refer to as blogging: long-form, literary, well-written posts on just about any subject you can imagine. I became addicted to their posts, which at that time were still very frequent, and I started to write my updates in a similar format. Those two wrote the first "blogs" I ever saw on the Internets, even though no one used that word yet. In March of 2003, I called a spade a spade and broke out a .Blog section. Having such a section pretty much killed the need the site had for a "News" section, so now I've archived the "pre-.Blog" News pages here. The original pages, for 1996 and 1997, are pretty laughable for the most part, though you can see the first inkling of what would become my first true solo album, Any Raw Flesh?, in the very last entry of '97. These entries being fairly ancient history, I can't vouch for any hyperlinks contained in the entries - they may or may not be working, and I don't intend to fix or update any broken ones. So enjoy these pages for what they are - one man's first clumsy steps toward creating some sort of viable "Internet presence."
