I have been listening to the new Half Zaftig - Life Life Luster CD for over a month, and I just could not pick my favorite tune from this album.

I had it narrowed down to 3, but that was it.

So, after much thought, I choose #4 Sublimeinal as my favorrite.......

I tried to make this a poll so people could vote, but I kept getting an Error saying that there were too many poll options.......
Can I help it if there were a lot of tunes on this album.......

So let's try this the old fashioned way,
I now give you; a poll for your favorite tune from the new Half Zaftig - Life Like Luster CD:

#1 Our Guarantee
#2 A Kick In The Shin
#3 Fair Use
#4 Sublimeinal
#5 Inscrutable You
#6 Numbered days
#7 In A Simple Rhyme
#8 Mold On The Soles
#9 10 Print
#10 Stinky Cheese
#11 Handbasket
#12 Right Outside
#13 Dusty Demonatrix

Oh yeah, IF you do not have this CD, go out and get it.......

Do band members get to play?

If so, MY favorite is...

"Inscrutable You"

Oh, my fave is Numbered Days. No, wait, Inscrutable You. Maybe Hand Basket, or Sublimeinal.......

Let's face it, it changes daily, I couldn't possibly pick 4, let alone 1.

When I first got it, I liked the first half of the cd better than the second half...now they've flipped places. Sorta. Depends on the day...but
I really groove on the whole damn thing.

Fair Use remains my favorite. The hooks and that chorus just had me at hello.

Numbered Days & Inscrutable You are tied for second. The rest are tied for third.

On a side note, I finally scored a copy of Toy Matinee, so I've given LLL a break this week. Laughing

There are three songs competing for best song in my ears: 10 print, Handbasket and Sublimeinal.

There are two songs that to me are sort of not the best: Numbered Days and In a simple Rhyme.

The rest is in between those two categories.

This is too hard. When I write it down I can hear all those little voices ("But wait, the instrumental part of Inscrutable You is unique", "You're constantly singing the out chorus of Fair Use" "Why are you not mentioning the heaviest song on the record??" etc. etc.).

The biggest problem with LLL is it's length: the songs are so diverse I get disappointed/frustrated that there is only one song that sounds like any given song. I want more!!

Hi,

This isn't really possible for me... honestly. I think this album is so great all-around, that it's just not worth wracking my brain trying to pick a favorite. I had this same idea in my head the other day on a long drive and gave up.

I hear ya... but it's better than a entire record of the same stuff over and over. Those kinds of albums wear thin on me really quickly.

Handbasket has really gurgled to the top as of late. But I'm a sucker for just about every other song on the disc, at any time.

My least favorite is Numbered Days and I'm a bit surprised (although very pleased) to read that others feel the complete opposite. I'm glad that my least favorite is someone else's favorite... and I think speaks directly to what makes this album great. It's diverse and available to anyone's tastes. I don't hate ND per se. But the vocals kind of "stick out" in a way that they don't in the other tracks... sounds like older recordings to me. I like the song though... in fact I think it's just the vocals that bug me a little. I hate to be critical, although certainly fair, because anything I may feel negatively about any particular part of this record is totally blown away by everything positive. It truly is the best full-release album I've heard is so damn long.

Right Outside was, and probably still is my penultimate least favorite song. But admittedly, has really grown on me lately.

I've really started appreciating that idea of a "movement" someone pointed out in the other thread... the trio of Mold On My Soles, 10 Print, and Handbasket. I'm glad someone made mention of it. It really is a solid part of the album and I can't really listen to one without the other two... like Heartbreaker without Livin' Lovin' Maid.

I just like listening to the songs and thinking, "wow, that third guitar is so neat and tasteful... how would someone know to add that... how would you know it needed it". The musicianship, the artistry, the performances, the production, the depth, the quality of LLL is astounding to me... far moreso than I honestly expected, beyond what I though was even possible actually, especially after ARF (which is fun to go back and rock out to after listening to LLL so much).

Clearly, I'm still gushing over this.

I don't think it's too long, but your comment did remind me of something I thought on my first listen. I'm glad Dusty Dominatrix is the last song.

On its own I like it, but in my opinion it really doesn't fit in with the rest of the album. I don't see it fitting comfortably between any of the other songs.

Was it always slated for the finale, Shawn?

Nope! I wanted it right after "Inscrutable You." And Beller agrees with that idea! Laughing

Pete and Lizzy wanted it at the end. I honestly didn't care that much so I was fine to put it there. They were both pretty insistent on that one, as I recall. From my own perspective, I don't see DD as being all that much of a departure, but then I'm weird, so.

ALTHOUGH: DD was the final track on the original 7-track "Soft Palate Demos" disc that most of LLL sprang from.

I find it interesting that Witty's two least-faves are the oldest tracks (from a writing standpoint) on the record. "RO" was written in 1989, and "ND" was finished in 1995. Everything else was written 2003 and later.

Right, and I knew that to be true, having had the "inside track" on your career for so long. But I figured I'd let you make that point if deemed necessary. I tried to make sure that it WASN'T that fact that was influencing my opinion.

It's not like I ever skip either of those two songs. I always end up listening to the entire CD front to back... perhaps not all at once (since drive times vary, the CD is in my car), but there's never any skipping going on. So every track has had a fair listen. RO has grown on me quite a bit lately. ND is just my least fav on a record chock full of favs.

I like the order of the songs. I was gonna mention that I also like the end-of-song realities that appear on occasion, like the chatter, giggling, etc. Just enough to be complimentary, without being gaudy and excessive. I like where the first "life like luster" is in the order. It feels like a mini-narration that pops up and keeps the train going... and really helps make the "second half" of the album actually feel like the second half. 'Course, the second "life like luster" is a very apt intro to DD. It all just works for me. Even the silence between songs seems thought-out and appropriate. The pause between tracks one and two, for example, is perfect, broken with Pete's kick-crash combo. It's that kind of attention that makes spending 10 bucks a friggin' bargain.

In fact, I just decided to pick up a couple more copies and seek out some successful college radio stations around here and donate them to their rotation. There's no reason HZ should have to do all this by themselves. If I'm a super-fan, the damn it, I should act like one. It's time to put in a little leg work for cryin' out loud.

Look for an order tomorrow Shawn. Dancing with the Stars is on in about 15 minutes and I still have some popcorn to pop. Razz

Although I’m wanting to sound in here,
I also sensed it was important to get a good feel for the level of friendship and seniority that many of you (contributors) possess.

The right to review LLL is obviously given to all.
But there is something special that goes on here on Shawn’s board.
There are personal relationships here that go way back and others that are relatively new.

Shawn, the way you interact here with answers to questions and clarification of events is very cool.
There is so much more substance to the whole LLL experience then there would be if not for all of the intelligent contribution from this small community.
That said, I am grateful for the opportunity to have met all of you
( IRL and on this board )

You have all added to my LLL day.

The album is very good.
I enjoy the “inside joke” stuff in particular.
Little bits of trivia if you will.
An addicting combination of friends, musicianship, and laughter Very Happy .
It’s just a great time guys !!

Standing up on my Soapbox....... Rolling Eyes

I am either very impressed or just bitten by the HZ bug, but this CD has managed to stay in the rotation for THREE months.

I rarely keep a CD in for more than one month. It might come back sometime later on, but usually one month and they're gone.

In October, I had 2 holdovers, Rory Gallagher - Calling Card and Half Zaftig - Triple L.

For November, amazingly, Triple L has stayed in the changer.

This month's 6 choices are:

Cactus - Cactology
Danny Joe Brown - The Danny Joe Brown Band
Roy Buchanan - Roy Buchanan
Pat Travers - Putting It Straight
Led Zeppelin - Prescence (the radio stations here seem to play nothing off that CD)
Half Zaftig - Life Like Luster

Okay, climbing down off my Soapbox, and returning you to your regularly scheduled insanity....... Mr. Green
