I killed Witty's "first of 2008" post because I'm pretty sure it was a spam thread.
But Witty still gets the "first post of '08" award! Huzzah!
How's everybody doing? We have to hurry up and rehearse to get ready for our two January gigs coming. We haven't practiced since the two October shows we did, cuz life got real hectic there in Nov-Dec. |

Happy New Year to all!
Doing pretty good, here, except I seem to be developing a cold.
Shawn. I read, with some distress, about your new fitness regime. Mrs.M loves going to the gym and keeps trying to get me to go (I appear to be expanding) but I find that running, rowing and riding things that go nowhere absolutely mind-numbing!!

Ian, I feel your pain (literally today... ouch). What I'm doing this year is what worked best for me in the past, which is getting trained by a professional, several times a week. Something about 1) the financial outlay 2) the psychological aspect of not wanting to "fail" at the challenges given to me and 3) having somebody push me far harder than I will push myself, tends to be the combination that works.
As far as various activities, the place I've joined is very non-traditional and from what I can tell so far my trainer Mo (short for Maureen) is going to be throwing new things at me every session. Yesterday, I didn't even touch a machine or pick up a heavy thing at all - it was all stuff done with my own (sadly, considerable) body weight. I think there will be weights and equipment for me in the future, but I'm enjoying the current approach. Well, as much as one can enjoy pain, failing muscles, and lightheaded-ness.
In the end, for me this is really about trying to get as healthy as I can, so that in years to come I'll have fewer issues to worry about. As I slide inexorably towards 40, I've noticed that my body has a harder and harder time with all the bad habits I've had since my teens. |

Mo (plenty of Maureens over here!) seems as though she knows how to keep you, umm, entertained, and I think you're dead right with the incentives.
I'll be hitting 40 this June (SHIT! 6 months away!!), and I really should exercise more, it's really the only part of my lifestyle that's lacking. I eat healthily, have never smoked, my alcohol intake is, on average, very low, but I have a fairly sedentary job, and the biggest physical burst was loading gear in/out when I was with the band. That's now gone, so I may be forced to do something else. I've actually found your post quite inspiring.
Good luck with it, Shawn. All the suffering has a positive effect, so I'm told!
